Upon a Saturday morning... Martha had decided to go and look for Ilse. She missed her friend and she was lonely. Her parents didn't make her mind so much on Saturdays, as long as she was back home for supper.
And so, early one Saturday morning, she took her basket and went down the footpath. The leaves on the trees were just coming out, and there were small creatures running about. It was so peaceful out here, so deserted. It took a small while to actually see that there might be something other than the footpath in the forest...
Ivan Boyokevitch was one of the largest men anywhere for miles. It was one of the reasons he liked the colony so much. Everyone else wanted him to box and fight. But he wanted to paint; it was all he'd ever wanted to do since he was a small boy in a Russian village. He could be quite a terrifying man, if he were in a mood to be, but most of the artists knew that he was the gentlest soul for miles.
He did not mind doing the heavy work; if largeness and strength were his gifts, then he would use them in a way that benefited his friends. So at the moment, he was stacking fallen logs on a wagon. Yes, whole ones. They weren't that heavy, really. Not when you lifted them one at a time. | | Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 | | 10:11 pm |
a sketch Ilse...was very good at getting her way, at times. Which was why she was in Horst's studio now, brushing out her hair in preparation to have him sketch her. The picture was for Hanschen, of course, and it really hadn't been that hard to persuade him. He was sweet on her, after all.
And so Horst was waiting for her in his studio, having set up the chaise for her, and had lit a fire. "Ilse," he called, "Come into the front room so I can start. There's a fire going and you'll be warm enough." |
